God, it's been forever! I've had a busy month. So, I've been thinking for a couple of days now, how strange life is. I'm lucky. Things for me pretty much stay the same. Same job, house, partner, city, etc.....
I got an email from an old friend, day before yesterday. He is an old friend I've know for 20 years. About 6 years ago he went missing. I had no idea what had happened to him. Last time I saw him, we were in NYC, where he had moved, and he was trying to talk me into moving there. After many attempts to reach him, I finally stopped. A year later I deleted his email address, and his his phone number. What would make someone do that to me? I mourned him these past few years, and thought the only thing that could have happened was that he had died. I was sure that if something had happened to, I would never find out since there were no friends that we shared in common.
And there it was, an email as if from a ghost. I didn't know what to do, answer it or not? People around me said yes, but my heart said no. It took me a full day to decide to write him back. I was short and snippy, writing, "What happened to you? I thought you had died. Glad you're alive", and singed it "Paul".
He wrote back and then I wrote back and this went on several times during the day. Turns out his life went topsy turvy. The point of this rambling, was that as much as I didn't want to open myself up, I did. I made that effort and challenged myself to do so. It wasn't easy for me. He needed his friend, and I'm glad I was there. Where we go from here is anybody's guess, but for now I know he's alive and surviving. No more wondering on my part.
Although I would never say who it is, or what he's been through, I will say this. Life is strange. How things happen. Our journeys, who we meet, how long we know them, what they are in our lives for, how we treat each other, how we love each other, what we learn from each other, etc...
